Rhythm Cafe MKE
VOL50 - Orlando Peña - Waxing
Season 2025 Episode 21 | 6m 33sVideo has Closed Captions
"Waxing" is a tender, hopeful love song born out of self-reflection.
Written during a transformative period in Orlando Peña’s life, the song serves as a spiritual sequel to a previous piece called "Waning," which explored feelings of emotional depletion and disconnection. In contrast, "Waxing" is about restoration—of self, of light, and of love.

I was living on Brady Street right next door to Art Smart's Dart Mart when I was like 22.
And again, I wanted to work on songwriting, but I'm a wildly distracted person.
So I thought going to live on my uncle's goat farm in the middle of nowhere would be a good way to focus.
And I had written a song called "Waning" while I was still here in Milwaukee.
It's sort of about, you know, like a waning moon.
Like, your light is fading.
You're sort of like shrinking in size and you're just not feeling like your whole self.
And so that was part of what kind of pushed me to move and make a change.
And after a few months of being there, I was just feeling really good.
It's a real big self-esteem boost when you move somewhere on your own, entirely new.
And so I was just staring at this big, bright full moon one night.
I went down there with my dog and like a van full of gear, pretty much, and they were breeding Great Pyrenees on the farm.
And so there's the Great Pyrenees and my dog are running laps around this farm, and they're howling.
And these coyotes like howling in the distance back at 'em.
And I'm staring at this big, bright full moon just drinking this like Mexican, like moonshine, essentially.
Just, you know, feeling really good about where I'm at.
And so I decided to write the answer to "Waning," which is "Waxing."
I was staring at this big, bright moon and just feeling really good about everything and sort of proud of myself for what I had done.
And so I decided to write this love song, but I didn't.
I was still new there, so I didn't know anybody yet.
So I just kind of say I wrote it to the moon.
