Behind the scenes at the extreme winter sport of ski joring.
Ski joring lit up the streets of Leadville last weekend for its 78th year. More than 100 athletes, plus thousands of spectators, flocked to Harrison Avenue in sub-freezing temperatures to witness the spectacle of athleticism. If you’re wondering what ski joring is, you’re not alone. We went behind the scenes with this year's winners.

So your focus really has to be on the task ahead of you.
I dont know, I feel like I black blackout.
I try to just think about holding on to the rope like its my lifeline, and then just line up for the rings, hit the gates, jumps, not think too much about my surroundings and just lock in.
I don't hear anything except my skier.
When I throw the rope, I look at his eyes and I ask him if he's ready and when hes ready, Ready when you are.
everything stands still for a moment, and then it's just like an explosion, a rush.
Ski joring is a sport, a winter sport, obviously.
It involves three athletes, we call it a three heartbeat sport.
Got the heartbeat of the horse, heartbeat of the skier, and the heartbeat of the rider.
It's my job as a rider to take that skier to his gates to his jumps and to his rings.
So it's not just a runaway horse race.
There is technical aspects to it that require, you know, cooperation between the horse, the rider and skier.
This is my rider Patrick Smith here on Frankie Moon.
Stud of a rider and horse.
I'm super stoked to ride with him.
One thing thats super important to me is to set a strategy with your rider.
Determine what you guys want to do and try to implement that strategy.
But also just good vibes.
I feel like I love just, like, a good classic high five and smile before the run to keep things light.
It's totally based on time.
You miss a gate, its five seconds.
You miss a ring, it's two seconds.
You miss a jump, it's five seconds.
Short races, 14 seconds are good times.
Long races, 24 to 25 seconds.
Leadville is super unique, its like four or five pretty stout jumps into flat landings, and you got to reposition and get lined up for the ring stations afterwards.
You're landing, you know, you're taking off six and feet jumps, landing on, you know, a handful of inches of snow on top of concrete.
It's incredible.
We don't make money doing this.
I just do it for the love of the sport.
